Charlotte Brown of Marshall, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home on September 16, 2026, at 9:35 p.m. She was born on June 8, 1951, to Ray and Edna (Romoser)Thompson. She attended Marshall High School and lived a life marked by compassion, humor, courage, and a deep appreciation for the people and experiences that mattered most.
Charlotte was great fun to be around and brought a sense of adventure wherever she went. Always willing to try something new, she rarely let fear stand in the way of a memorable experience. She enjoyed riding in hot-air balloons and going zip-lining, and she was especially proud of herself for doing the “crazy” things that made life unforgettable. She approached each adventure with enthusiasm and a willingness to make the most of every opportunity.
She was witty and had a wonderful sense of humor. Through a clever comment, a playful observation, or her unique way of seeing the world, Charlotte knew how to make people laugh. Her quick wit and infectious laughter made time spent with her especially memorable.
Of all the roles Charlotte held throughout her life, her favorite was simply being Mom/Grandma, Gigi. Her grandchildren were among her greatest joys, and she supported them wholeheartedly in everything they did, whether they were near or far. She spent endless hours watching their activities, cheering them on, taking an interest in what mattered to them, and encouraging their endeavors. She taught them to pursue what they loved and to appreciate the journey along the way.
Charlotte was deeply selfless. Whenever someone was in need, she found a way to help, offering encouragement, practical assistance, a listening ear, or simply the comfort of her presence. She gave generously of her time, energy, and heart, often placing the needs of others before her own. Her kindness was not merely something she expressed; it was a way of life.
Family was at the center of Charlotte’s life, and she maintained warm connections with loved ones both near and far. Her home was a welcoming place, and she found special fulfillment in serving as a host family, making others feel accepted and included. Many who came into her life left feeling that they had gained another family.
Charlotte also loved to travel and experience new places. Among her favorite destinations was Florida, where she especially enjoyed having her toes in the sand and soaking up the sunshine. Whether visiting somewhere new, attempting a daring activity, or sharing an ordinary day with loved ones, she had a gift for turning experiences into lasting memories.
Charlotte is survived by her husband, Thomas Brown Sr.; her children, Tommy Brown (Sandi), Brenda Cooper (Travas), Jennifer Brown, and Melissa Hendrix (Jason); her grandchildren, Tyler Martin, Coen Martin, Lillian (Noah) Brown, Olivia Martin, Alaina Hendrix, Kason Hendrix, Dylan Reed, Callie Brown (Austin), Darien Ewing, and Ryder Brown; and her great-grandchildren, Ivy Parker, Cooper Brown, Noelle Brown, and Liam Brown.
She is also survived by her siblings, Ray and Esther Thompson, Reverend Robert and Carol Thompson, Janet Hetherington, Warren and Terri Thompson, Melvin and Jane Thompson, and Wanda and Rick Pine; her sister-in-law, Mary Lee Thompson; brother-in-law, Ronald Scott; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Edna Thompson; and her siblings, Ed Thompson, Bill and Joan Thompson, Herman and Rosemary Thompson, Marcella Scott, Harold Dean Thompson, and Glen Dale and Wanda Thompson.
Charlotte’s legacy will live on through the family she cherished, the people she helped, those she welcomed into her life, and the memories she created along the way. She showed those around her the importance of being present, offering a helping hand, keeping a sense of humor, and embracing life with courage.
Her family will remember her generous spirit, welcoming heart, quick wit, and unforgettable laughter. They will remember how much fun she was, how readily she tried something new, and how proud she was each time she conquered another challenge. When they find themselves with their toes in the sand, laughing together, or preparing to do something a little daring, they will surely think of Charlotte.

Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of Charlotte on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at West Union Christian Church in West Union, Illinois. For those so desiring memorial contributions may be made to either the Marshall or Hutsonville Schools.
