Cheryl Lynn Cox Athey, 59, of Terre Haute and formerly of Marshall, IL passed away Thursday, Aug. 1, 2019 at her home surrounded by her family following a long battle with Huntington’s Disease. Cheryl was born Nov. 23, 1959 at Mt. Carmel, IL, the daughter of John and Deanna Stallings Cox. She was preceded in death by her mother and a sister, Lisa Sanders. Surviving are her three children, Ryan Athey, Chad Evan Athey and Lynsey Dee (Robert) Dickerson; a grandson, Evan Robert Dickerson all of Terre Haute; her father and stepmother, John and Jan Cox of Charleston, IL; stepsisters, Jamie (Bill) Antonacci and Jennifer (Cullen) Porter; a brother-in-law, Roy Sanders and many special nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. She married Greg Athey on Nov. 26, 1976. Cheryl graduated from Marshall High School in 1977 and was Homecoming Queen her senior year. She was a member of St. Joseph’s University Parish, a member of Tri Kappa Sorority and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years in Terre Haute. One of the most important parts of her life was loving and taking care of her children and grandson. She was a remarkable cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends. An avid country music fan she attended many concerts throughout the years. Even though she had many struggles in her life she never complained and met them with grace. She was a kind, giving, loyal and nonjudgmental person and to know her was to love her. Her family is so very grateful to Great Lakes Hospice for their wonderful and compassionate care the last three month of her life. Family and friends are invited for a time of sharing memories and sharing the struggles of loss from 3:00 to 6:00 PM CST Saturday, Aug. 10th at Pearce Funeral Home in Marshall. Special thoughts will be shared and a tribute to her life will be 6:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home.
