Obituary for Clayton William Rhoads Clayton W. "Bill" Rhoads, 83 of Marshall, IL passed away 12:04 PM Monday, April 21, 2014 in Union Hospital at Terre Haute, IN. He was the former owner and operator of Rhoads Garage in Marshall and had served as a volunteer firefighter of the Marshall Fire Dept. for 50 years. For many of the 50 years, he served as Chief. He was born Dec. 5, 1930 at Marshall, IL, the son of Clayton Rhoads and Helen Campbell Rhoads. He married Florence Letner on September 12, 1954 at Hernando, MS. Surviving are his wife, Flossie; three children, Gwyn (David) Brown of Sterling, IL, Gayle (Larry) Lisman of Indianapolis, IN and Bill (Nancy) Rhoads of Marshall; a sister, Ann (Warren) Strohm of Marshall, IL; grandchildren, Nicholas (Elaine) Brown, Nathan (Courtney) Brown, Jared (Danielle) Brown, Joshua Brown, Ryan (Angela) Rhoads, Aaron (Shelbie) Rhoads and Lindsey (Anthony) Osborne; seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Trefz and a brother-in-law, Ted Trefz. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marshall, Knights of Pythias and was a graduate of Marshall High School. Bill served this nation in the US Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of VFW Post #5975 and Clark Co. Post #90 of the American Legion where he had served as commander. He loved to hunt and also wood working and carpentry. Following his retirement from Rhoads Garage he had worked at Kirchner Building Center and Mill Creek Park. Services in honor of his life will be 10:00 AM Friday at Pearce Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Lewis officiating. Burial will be in the Marshall Cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be 4-7 PM Thursday at the funeral home with a Firefighters Walkthrough at 7:00 PM.
