Duane E. "Gene" Shumaker, 74, of Marshall, IL passed away 12:22 AM Monday, January 11, 2016 in Union Hospital at Terre Haute, IN.
He was a self employed carpenter and was the owner of Shumaker Grave Opening Services since 1975.
Gene was born July 31, 1941 in Clark Co., IL, the son of Everett and LaDonna Michaels Shumaker. He married Joanne Bishop on May 25, 1962 in Clark Co. Surviving are his wife; three sons, Duane (Kim) Shumaker and Tim (Veronica) Shumaker of Marshall and Glenn (Rachel) Shumaker of Le Roy, IL; grandchildren, Jessica Smallwood, Stephanie Dicus, Nicole Shumaker, Ryan Shumaker and Trice Shumaker; great grandchildren, Addie Shumaker and Caselyn Smallwood and one on the way, Hunter Eugene Shumaker; five step great grandchildren and two brothers, Leland Shumaker and Emery Shumaker. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a grandchild, Courtney Jean Shumaker and a great grandchild, Elle Marie Shumaker.
He was a member of the Armstrong United Methodist Church and was a trustee of Dunlap Cemetery and Livingston Cemetery. He had coached softball and baseball and was instrumental in the formation of the Girl's Softball Field in Marshall.
Gene served this nation in the 101st Air Borne Division of the US Army. On his 70th birthday he made his 100th parachute jump along with other family members. He had been a long distance runner and bicyclist.
Services in honor of his life will be 1:30 PM Friday at the Armstrong United Methodist Church with Pastors Krista Price and Joe Irwin officiating. Burial will be in the Livingston Cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be 4-8 PM Thursday and 9:00 AM until service time Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers it is requested memorial contributions be made to the scholarship fund of VFW Post #5975 or to Summer Lunch, INC., an organization that provides meals to children during the summer.
