E.J. Huffington E. J. Huffington (Ernest Jack), 94, of Marshall, IL passed away 8:30 AM Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Heartland Manor Nursing Center in Casey.
He was born August 23, 1920 in West Union, Illinois, the son of Beulah Brown Huffington and Fred Huffington. He Married Elsie Lou Cork on June 23, 1942 in St. Louis.
Surviving are his three daughters, Virginia (Jim) Knierim of Casey, IL, Cathy (Jim) Smithson of Forsyth, IL, and Janet (Dudley) Crow of Marshall, IL. Nine grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, and a brother Clayton Dale (JoAnn) Huffington of Marshall. In addition to his parents, and his wife, he was preceeded in death by a daughter Carol Hutton, two brothers who died in infancy Virgil and Paul, a sister Betty Spangler and a brother Dean Huffington.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Marshall and a 1939 graduate of Marshall High School. He was a member of Scottish Rite Valley of Danville, Shrine Club of West Union Il, Masonic Lodge West Union IL and a seventy year member of the American Legion.
He attended Rose Polytec Institute (now Rose Hulman Institute), Terre Haute IN before joining the Seabees in 1942. He was a lead surveyor for the landing strips on Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and Tinian Islands (he laid out the airstrips from which the Anola Gay flew). He took the Seabee Motto "Can Do" as his own and throughout his professional life he always found a way to get things done; regardless of the difficulty.
He was County Highway Engineer for Clark County from 1958--1984. and was also County Highway Engineer for Cumberland County from 1979--1984.
Services in honor of his life will be 10:00 AM Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, 702 Plum St., Marshall, IL with Rev. Krista Price officiating. Burial will be in the Marshall Cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be 3-7 PM Monday and prior services at the church on Tuesday.
