Eva Schmidt Blockinger, 94, of Marshall, IL and formerly of Chicago was united in Heaven with her beloved husband, the late Glenn L. Blockinger, Sr. on June 24, 2013. Eva was born in DeutschBentshek, Hungary, now Romania, on March 26, 1919 to the late John and Eva Schreiber Schmidt. Eva and her parents came to the United States in December of 1920 and settled in Chicago. Eva attended Loretto Academy for Girls. During WW II she worked as a limo driver for Reed & Co. Eva met her future husband in Chicago and was introduced to him by friends who called him "Jim". Eva called her husband by that name throughout their 42 years of marriage. They were married on May 2, 1946 and lived in the Chicago area for 37 years. They made their home in Marshall 30 years ago until Glenn Sr.'s death on June 21, 1988. Eva continued to live in Marshall volunteering at St. Mary's Church as a Eucharistic Minister, Reader and occasionally as an altar server which was her favorite job. Eva belong to St, Mary's Ladies Guild, St. Mary's Helping Hands, American Legion Auxiliary of Post 90 as Chaplain, the Women's Club of Marshall, Friends of the Marshall Public Library, Marshall Food Pantry and Burnsides Nursing Home Guild as a volunteer for chapel services and bingo. She was also a Girl Scout leader for many years in Chicago. Eva loved to travel with her husband and her children, camping being the primary method for many years. She travelled to Germany, Hawaii and Alaska in addition to many states in the continental U.S. Besides travelling, Eva enjoyed reading and collecting hats which she wore to church every Sunday. Eva also collected horses and Chinese figurines. Eva is survived by her daughters, Marla (Roy) Bonus of Naperville, IL and Paula (Fred) Schwarz of Littleton, Colorado and her son Glenn (Patricia) Blockinger, Jr. of Leland, IL. Eva was a grandmother to Marlissa (Marcin) Tutaj, Jonathon Bonus, Steven Schwarz, Robert (Brooke) Blockinger and Sarah Blockinger. She was also a great-grandmother to Roman Tutaj, Chandler and Morgan Schwarz-Shoaf, Collin and Bella Blockinger. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Irmagene (Ray) Blockinger Nelson of West Union, IL and 10 nieces and nephews. Eva was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Marian (the late Charles) Marshall; a great-granddaughter Kirsten Blockinger; her in-laws, Everett and Martha Jane Spangler Blockinger and her sister-in-law, Imogene Blockinger Brown. Visitation will be held at Pearce Funeral Home in Marshall on Friday, July 5, 2013. A prayer vigil will begin at 4:00 PM with visitation to follow until 8:00 PM. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM on Saturday , July 6, 2013 at St. Mary's Church in Marshall. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery next to her beloved husband, Jim. If so desiring, memorial contributions in her name can be made to St. Mary's Helping Hands, the Marshall Public Library or Burnsides Guild. Mom will be missed by many friends she made in Marshall for 30 years. Her family thanks them for sharing her long life, many adventures and her hat collection.
