Frederick William Herrington, 83, of Marshall, IL passed away April 17, 2019 in the Burnsides Community Care Center at Marshall. He was born May 30, 1935 in St. Anthony Hospital (now Regional Hospital) to John William Herrington and Nina Shirely Herrington. He lived in Clark County his entire life on his father’s farm near the Indiana, Illinois State Line until August 19, 1998, then moved to Marshall, IL at 215 S. 8th St. During his working life he lived away from home 5 days a week and home on weekends. He never knew his grandparents on his father’s side, they passed away before he was born, as he came along late in life. His grandparents on the Shirley side which lived just ¾ mile down the road, grandfather Shirley passed away in 1942 and his grandmother Shirley passed away in March of 1950 when he was 14 years old. Growing up, Fred helped at home with the farm animals, such as milking the cows and farming by driving the tractor in the fields, there were always chores to be done. He learned to drive with his Dad’s 29 Model A Ford, didn’t have a phone in the home until he was in high school and had no electricity until October of 1950. He went to grade school all 8 grades at Pleasant Grove just 1 ½ miles from his home. His teacher for his first 2 years was Clarence Collier and LaFern Adams for the last 6 years of grace school at Pleasant Grove. He then went to high school in Marshall for all 4 years and graduated in the spring of 1953 and then in January of 1954 he went to work for Public Service Indiana (now Duke Energy) and retired 31 years later in September of 1984 at the Wabash River Generating Station. Fred was very compassionate and loving toward others and had many friends. He enjoyed flower gardening, travel, antique shopping with his friends. Since retirement he was President of his class for 7 years and was a member of Dunlap Methodist Church where he attended church most of his life until the last few years and he attended Emanuel United Methodist church. One of his worst habits was buying a new car about every 2 years owning some 30 new cars of various kinds and models in his life time. Fred served in the U.S. Army from March 10, 1958 to Marshal 10, 1960. He is survived by his special friends, Jorge C. Frank, Bill and Ann Caserotti, Wanda Kuehner and many other wonderful friends which were all his extended family. He was preceded in death by his father on Jan. 16, 1971 and his mother on April 30, 1990 and all his aunts and uncles. Services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Wednesday at Pearce Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Pringle officiating. Visitation will be 12 Noon until service time. Burial will be in the Livingston Cemetery with military graveside rites. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dunlap Methodist Church. pearcefuneralservices.com.
