Herbert Shaffner, 89, of Marshall, IL passed away Friday evening, April 19, 2013 in the Burnsides Community Health Care Center at Marshall. He was a retired jeweler having worked at Hillman Jewelers at Terre Haute, IN for 42 years. He was born May 14, 1923 at Martinsville, IL, the son of Tennis Shaffner and Clara Spittler Shaffner. He married Violet Saiter on March 11, 1944. Surviving are his wife, Violet; a daughter, Sheila Shaffner Shotts of Marshall, IL; a granddaughter, Kaylee Marie Shotts of Marshall, IL; a brother, Jack Shaffner of Martinsville, IL and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Gene Shaffner, George Shaffner, Frank Shaffner and Wayne Shaffner and two sisters, Nellie Weppler and Betty Hardway. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marshall, Clark Co. Post #90 of the American Legion, VFW Post #5975, Marshall Lions Club, was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Trophy and was a graduate of Martinsville High School. He loved having coffee with his friends in the morning and was an avid sports fan. He served his country in the US Army during WW II in the 871st Signal Co. in Guam. Services in honor of his life will be 2:00 PM Tuesday at Pearce Funeral Home in Marshall with Rev. Richard Lewis and Rev. David Deal officiating. Burial will be in the Marshall Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted in honor of his service to our nation by VFW Post #5975 and Clark Co. Post #90 of the American Legion.
