He was a lifelong union Ironworker, a member of the Masonic Lodge, American Legion, the Clark County Sportsman Club, the Christian Church in West Union, IL and attended the First United Methodist Church of Marshall. He possessed a private pilot license, owned his own plane and greatly enjoyed flying. Larry, or Squirrelman as he was known, was a true jack of all trades. As an Ironworker he left his mark on many buildings, bridges, power plants and factories around the two state area. For several years he owned his own business building grain bins, shop buildings and tanks for local farmers. In 1988 he redesigned and rebuilt the Darwin Ferry and then supervised the 1/2 mile move from his shop to the river, where it still could be found until a few years ago. Larry retired from the Ironworker's Local 439 in 2000 but not from life. He continued to build and loved nothing better than tackling a big project.. Whether it was rebuilding an engine or a house, he always had at least one project going. Whatever the tasks, he could do it and do it perfectly. Larry was an avid gunsmith and enjoyed target shooting. He designed and built several of his own target rifles and with his sharp eyes was very competiitive in competitions. He was an enthusiastic gardener who planted large gardens and tended them all summer while planning next years in the fall and winter. His biggest loves were small children and pets. He loved staying busy but always found time to help others. He was a genuine, good guy and will be great missed by all who had the pleasure to know him.
