Lura Carolyn (Piety) Staub, 89, of Marshall, IL died peacefully Oct. 19, 2016 in the Burnsides Community Care Center.
She was born March 17, 1927; she was called “Carolyn” all her life. Carolyn grew up with her parents, Coral Warrick Piety and Cecil Piety and three older brothers in Prairie Creek, IN.
After graduation with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Indiana State University, she became a music teacher. Wearing bright red lipstick as she drove her yellow convertible that she bought with her own paycheck, Carolyn wooed Donald Eugene Staub of Marshall with her style. They married after only three months of courtship. She later became a homemaker to care for their growing family. Carolyn loved to laugh and have a good time. She helped direct the choir at St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she regularly attended mass. She also played cards with a Bridge Club for many years. Carolyn and Don hosted family parties where she set the tone for fun by playing Nat King Cole and the Big Band music of Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, starting Euchre games and helping lay out a bounteous spread of food for the family.
Carolyn is survived by a family who is grateful for her love, humor and appreciation of music. Her five children are Mary Jean (Tom Warren) Barber, Marcia Sue (Pat Duzan) Murphy, Kathleen Marie (Tom) Ballard, Michael Eugene (Candace) Staub and Diane Lynn (Matt) Nestleroad, She has fourteen grandchildren: Jason Barber, Stephanie (Brandon) Williams, Erin (Tim McHenry) Murphy-McHenry, Sean Murphy, Daniel Murphy, Patrick Murphy, Anna Murphy, Nathaniel Staub, Isaac (Lacey) Staub, Gabrielle Staub, Jairus Staub, Micah Staub, Laurel Staub and Evan Nestleroad and six great grandchildren, Jacob, Jalynn, Thomas, Riley, Donovan and Cormac. Mass of the Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Augustine Koomson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:00 AM top 10:50 AM Friday at Pearce Funeral Home. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association.
