Mary Alice Irwin, 96, of Marshall, IL passed away 8:02 AM Friday, July 12, 2019 in Burnsides Community Health Center at Marshall. She was born on Dec. 29, 1922 in Anderson Twp., Clark Co., IL, the daughter of Raymond Cleo and Anna Samantha Shotts Lambdin. She married James Gordon Irwin on June 9, 1946 and he preceded her in death on July 17, 2006. She is survived by nieces, Jane Arthur of Bristol, VA, Janet Elaine Maesch of Staunton, IN, Ann Thompson of Woodview, TX; adopted niece, Chrstine Stogsdill of Vincennes, IN; nephews, Kent Tyler of Charleston, IL, Richard and Scott Tyler of Portland; a special friend, Carole Ann Warner of Marshall, IL and several great and great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Nina Stogsdill, Lorain Tyler and Norma Mitchell; a nephew, Larry Wayne Mitchell; an infant sister, Betty Jane Lambdin and a special friend, Donald Warner. She attended Eastern IL College and graduated from Indiana State University. She was an elementary teacher for 33 years in Marshall and 2 years in Darwin. Above her classroom door was a sign which said, “Through this door walk future teachers, merchants, doctors, lawyers, senators , and yes maybe even a president. Many of her students have done very well, The last day of school brought a tear and a silent prayer for each boy and girl as they left her classroom for the last time. Nothing pleased her more than to visit with former students. She retired in 1979. Then she and her husband traveled extensively within the U.S. and to several foreign countries. She was a member of Burnsides Nursing Home Guild; Retired Teachers’ Association and the First Christian Church in Marshall. Services in honor of her life will be 1:00 PM Tuesday at Pearce Funeral Home with Bro. John Cutshall officiating. Burial will be in the Marshall Cemetery. Visitation will be 10:00 AM until service time Tuesday at the funeral home.
