Mildred J. Hutchens, 94, of Marshall, IL passed away 3:16 AM Saturday, September 1, 2012 in Union Hospital at Terre Haute, IN. She was a retired public school teacher. She was born January 31, 1918 at Charleston, IL, the daughter of Charles and Leona Replogle Adkins. She married Lawrence Hutchens on May 31, 1946 at Marshall, IL and he preceded her in death on November 2, 1996. Surviving are her son, Max Hutchens of Thornton, CO; two granddaughters, Wendy Wood of New Jersey and Julie Findley of California and 5 great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Taylor and two brothers, Neal Adkins and Carroll Adkins. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marshall where she sang in the choir for 51 years and taught the Care and Share Class for over 50 years. She was a member of the Clark Co. Retired Teachers Association and the IL and National Teachers Association. She was a member of the Burnsides Guild and the Marshall Women's Club. Her teaching career of 42 years was for a short period at Ashmore, IL and the remaining years at Marshall, IL where she taught in the high school business department. Even after her retirement, for many years she would get up early in the morning and prepare herself for class in hopes she would be called upon to substitute. She loved her profession and she was highly respected by her students. Mrs. Hutchens tried to attend as many of the class reunions of her former students as she could and she was welcomed to those reunions with open arms. Services in honor of her life will be 1:00 PM Thursday at Pearce Funeral Home in Marshall with Rev. David Deal officiating. Burial will be in the Marshall Cemetery.
