Violet R. Shaffner, 94, of Marshall, IL passed away 10:15 PM Wednesday, March 25, 2015 in Union Hospital at Terre Haute, IN.
She was a retired Home Economics teacher after teaching for 35 years in both the Martinsville and Marshall School Districts. She was born Jan. 31, 1921 in Clark Co., IL, the daughter of Herman and Anna Welsh Saiter. She married Herbert Shaffner on March 11, 1944 and he preceded her in death on April 19, 2013. Surviving are a daughter, Sheila Kay Shaffner Shotts of Marshall, IL; a granddaughter, Kaylee Marie Shotts of Marshall, IL and several nieces and nephews.
Violet was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marshall. She was a 1938 graduate of Marshall High School, a 1942 graduate of Eastern IL University at Charleston, IL and later attended the University of Illinois. She was a charter member of Kappa Sigma Tau Sorority and a member of the former American Legion Auxiliary Choir. She was a life member of the I.E.A, the N.E.A. and the Clark County retired teachers association.
She had been inducted into the Livingston Lord Society at Eastern IL University and was awarded the Bellringer Medal from the IL State Pork Producers. Violet and also been a contributor of a column in the Marshall Choice newspaper with recipes and homemaking tips. She was the editor of a cookbook, "Choice Recipes".
Services in honor of her life will be 2:00 PM Sunday at Pearce Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Lewis officiating. Visitation will be 12 Noon until service time Sunday at the funeral home.
