Walter G. Kiger, 89, of Marshall, IL passed away 12:30 AM Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022 in Marshall Rehabilitation and Nursing. Walter Gene Kiger was born May 19, 1933 at Bridgeport, IL to Walter Verle Kiger and Dorothy (Miller) Kiger. Walter grew up and attended school in Bridgeport until his Junior year of high school when the family moved to Robinson, IL. He graduated from Robinson High School and met the love of his life, Betty Hollingsworth, while both were working at Woolworths. Betty and Walter were married Sept. 6, 1953 at the First Christian Church at Robinson. They had just celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. Walter served 2 years in the U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Meade, MD. When he came out of the service he used his G.I. Bill to attend the University of IL at Champaign-Urbana, IL, graduating with honors in 1957. Upon graduation he immediately started his career with Sears Roebuck. His first store with Sears was in Lafayette, IN. He retired from Sears in 1989 in St. Paul, MN having managed one of the biggest Sears stores in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. After retiring, Walter and Betty left Minnesota and returned to IL where he lived out his dream of having a little place out in the country right outside of Marshall. He enjoyed 23 years of the country life before moving into Marshall in 2012. In July of 2021 Walter and Betty moved into Hollybrook Assisted Living. He is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter, Debbie (Dave) Froeber of Fargo, ND; son, Greg Kiger of Ramsey, MN; daughter, Linda (Jerry) Kardell of Rogers, MN; grandchildren, Melina Kristoffersen, Jarah Dressel, Colin Froeber, Jared Froeber and Danielle Kiger; four great granddaughters; one sister, Evelyn Kessler; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Hollingsworth; several nieces and nephews and one special niece, Cindy Grimm. He was preceded in death by his parents and one great granddaughter. Walter enjoyed his family, working with Sears, the people he worked with, camping and being outdoors with his dogs. Services in honor of his life will be 11:00 AM Thursday at Pearce Funeral home. Burial with military honors will be in the Zion Cemetery.
