William "Bill" Yandell Wieck, 80, of Marshall, IL died Friday, February 6, 2015 in Union Hospital at Terre Haute, IN.
He was born in 1935 at Berwyn, IL, the son of Charles and Marie Yandell Wieck. Bill graduated from Indiana State University in 1962 with a B.A. in Social Sciences. After a 30 year career teaching at Marshall High School he retired in 1992.
Bill is survived by his wife of 58 years, Priscilla; a son, Paul (Donna) Wieck, a Marshall attorney residing in Charleston, IL; a daughter, Connie Wieck, an English language teacher in China; his brothers, Charles (Sherry) Wieck of Mattoon, IL and Phil (Glenda) Wieck of Bella Vista, AR; a brother-in-law, Rolf (Becky) Maris of New Bern, NC; a granddaughter, Meredith Wieck of Los Angeles, CA and her sisters, Alison Haynes of Boulder, CO and Heather Schuster of Elmhurst, IL and their children.
After graduating from Morris, IL High School in 1953, he joined the U.S. Marine Corp and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a life-long activist and Democrat who served as a former Chairman of the Clark County Democratic Party. He served an appointment to the Illinois Education Advisory Committee in Springfield. He was listed in the 1973 publication, Outstanding Young Men of America. As a community activist, Bill was chairman of Concerned Citizen of Clark County, a group that successfully contested the placement of a nuclear waste facility in Clark County.
In 1990, he was honored with the Human Services Award given by the Illinois Education Association and National Teachers Association for his leadership of that organization. Memberships included the Clark County Retired Teachers Association, Nuclear Information and Resource Service of Chicago, Clark Co. Post #90 of the American Legion, VFW Post #5975 of Marshall, Disabled American Veterans, Democratic National Committee, American Civil Liberties Union, Southern Poverty Law Center, Illinois Retired Teachers Association and Clark County Democrats. In retirement, Bill enjoyed playing golf, riding his motorcycle, supporting the Chicago Bears and Cubs and political campaigning and socializing with others in the Marshall community.
It is requested by his family that in lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to one of Bill's favorite organizations, Operation Smile (organization which helps children with cleft palates), Disabled American Veterans or the Clark County Democratic Party. Following cremation a memorial visitation will be held 4-7 PM Tuesday, February 10th at Pearce Funeral Home in Marshall. Memorial services in honor of his life will be 10:00 AM Wednesday at the funeral home with Rev. Richard Lewis of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Military services conducted by Clark Co. Post #90 of the American Legion and VFW Post #5975 will be conducted immediately after the memorial service at the funeral home.
