Charles Michael Smitley, 73, of Dayton, Ohio passed away Nov. 23, 2020 after his long battle with Alzheimer’s. Mike was born March 12, 1947 in Terre Haute, IN, son of the late Charles Joseph and Lois Juanita Smitley of Marshall, IL. He was a graduate of Marshall High School, where he played football, baseball, golf, bowling and tennis. Beside sports, Mike played the trumpet and enjoyed other school activities. While attending the University of Illinois, Mike was drafted into the United States Air Force. While stationed in San Antonio, he married Maria Leticia on July 19, 1969. Mike served his country as a bugler on base and an Intelligence Officer in Viet Nam. Upon his return to the U.S., he was stationed in Maryland until his honorable discharge. Mike was employed in management for Checker Convenience in Marshall, IL and was soon relocated to Mt. Vernon, IL. After Emro Marketing (Marathon Oil) purchased Checker, Mike became their District Manager covering 6 states. He soon relocated to their Regional Office near Chicago, IL where he began hiring and training all managers, while creating their training curriculum. Once again, Mike was promoted to Manager of Training and Development and relocated to Enon, OH, the corporate office for Speedway. He continued to create their Call Center for tech support, developing and updating their training manuals and implemented a periodic newsletter for managers country wide. After a successful career of 35 years, Mike retired and continued visiting family and friends, watching sports and playing golf. He mostly cherished his time surrounded by his wife, children and adored grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Lois; his brother-in-law’s Jerry Owens, Johnny Reyes and Timothy Keyes; his niece, Vanessa Reyes and his beloved in-laws, Juan and Juanita Reyes. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Maria Leticia Smitley; his children, Colette, Mike Jr., John; his grandchildren, C.J., Tori, Blake, Mia, Anna, Ari, and Zachary Jr.; his sister, Marilyn Sue Keyes; his sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws, Richard and Hilda Jackson, Larry and Alma Long, Bill and Martha Burns, Joe and Rose Coronado, Blanca Owens, Alice Reyes, Tim and Theresa Brunscheon, Jesse Reyes and Mirella Reyes and his beloved 11 nieces and 11 nephews and their families. Visitation will be 5-7 PM Friday at the Tobias Funeral Home in Beavercreek, OH. Services in honor of his life and confirmation of his faith will be 1:00 PM Saturday at Pearce Funeral Home in Marshall. Visitation will be one-hour prior services. Burial will be in the Marshall Cemetery with military graveside rites. In lieu of flowers, it is requested contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org in his honor.
