Joanne Shumaker, 80, of Marshall, IL passed away January 1, 2025. She was born June 18, 1945 at Terre Haute, IN, the daughter of Dean and Esther Griffin Bishop. On May 25, 1962 she Duane Shumaker who preceded her in death on Jan. 11, 2016. In addition to to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Sylvia Kuhn; a grandchild, Courtney Jean Shumaker and great grandchild, Elle Marie Shumaker. Surviving are three sons, Dwane (Kim) Shumaker of Marshall, IL, Tim (Veronica) Shumaker of Terre Haute, IN and Glenn (Rachel) Shumaker of Indianapolis, IN; three brothers, Nelson (Carol) Bishop of Marshall, IL, Norman (Sandy) Bishop of Marshall, IL and John (Joyce) Bishop of Martinsville, IL; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was a graduate of Marshall High School and had attended both the Armstrong and Zion United Methodist Church's. While she and her husband were raising their sons, she cleaned houses for many individuals, drove a school bus, where she would often have to place her three sons in the seat directly behind her so she could keep an eye on them for various reasons and was a part time rural mail carrier. She later became a full time rural mail carrier and retired after over 30 years of service.She was often referred to as the "Mail Lady" by many and met several interesting people on her route, which was 110 miles, who eventually became her friends. Joanne was an excellent cook being well known for her wonderful noodles and apple pies. Many neighbors would often bring her berries in exchange for a pie (Thanks Fred). During her spare time, she played fast pitch softball and bowled, but most of all enjoyed being with her family. Visitation will be held 10:00 AM to 12 Noon Tuesday, Jan. 6th at Pearce Funeral Home with a service in honor of her life following the visitation. Pastor Joe Irwin will officiate. Burial will be in the Livingston Cemetery. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Marshall Food Distribution & Clothing Center.
