John S. Smith, 96, of Marshall, IL, formerly of New Goshen, IN, passed away 7:20 PM Wednesday, April 8, 2015 in the Vermillion Convalescent Center at Clinton, IN.
He was formerly employed as a technician and supplier for vending services. John was born Jan. 11, 1919 at Yale, IL, the son of Elmer Smith and Axie Jewell smith. He married Elizabeth Carter in July of 1942 and she preceded him death on Nov. 24, 1987.
Surviving are his five children, Don Smith of Marshall, IL, Jack (Nancy) Smith of Schaumburg, IL, Mary Beth Bolt of Clinton, IN, Carolyn (Kenneth) Sanders of Clinton, IN and Donna (Vince) Whitecotton of Houston, TX; a special friend, Dorothy Miller of Marshall, IL 15 grandchildren; several great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 2 sisters. He honorably served this nation in the US Army during WW II.
He was a member of VFW Post #5975. John was a talented musician having played in various bands in the Chicago, IL area and the Wabash Valley for many years. He was a true lover of country music.
Services in honor of his life will be 10:00 AM CST Monday at Pearce Funeral Home, 314 S. 6th St., Marshall, IL with Pastor Wendy Olsen officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park at North Terre Haute, IN with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post #5975 and Clark Co. Post #90 of the American Legion.
