Lloyd Richard “Horsefly” Smelcer, 72, of Marshall, IL passed away Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016 at his home. He had worked for the Mason-Dixon Trucking Line for 20 years and later worked for Edington Wrecker Service for over 20 years prior to his retirement. Following retirement he assisted Knowles Auction Service. Horsefly was born June 12, 1944 at Mosheim, TN, the son of William Enoch and Velma Ruth Fincher Smelcer. He married Dorothy Clouse Smelcer on June 12, 1967 at Marshall, IL and she as well as their son and daughter-in-law, Richard L. and Gina Smelcer were killed in a tragic automobile accident in Lawrence Co., IL on Oct. 5, 2006. Surviving are a daughter, Kim (Dan) St. John of West Union, IL; grandchildren, Jessica Smith, Tori Chapman and Stephanie Chapman all of West Union, IL and Jerry Chapman of Glen Carbon, IL; two step grandchildren, Jessica St. John and Heather St. John of West Union, IL; great grandchildren, Keyleigh Smith, Zoey Kilmer, Kendall Smith and Aiden Kilmer; a sister, Opal “Cookie” Tolliver of Mohawk TN; a brother, Fred (Karen) Smelcer of West Terre Haute, IN; brothers and sisters-in-law, Effie Wallace, Henry (Pat) Boesiger, Duane (Cindy) Boesiger, Ron Boesiger, Cheryl Kleine and Tony (Tami) Boesiger and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a grandchild, Karleigh Smith; two brothers, Coy and Ray Smelcer and a sister, Bobby Jo Williams. He would often been seen driving around with his dog on his lap and he was a big NASCAR fan. Lloyd served this nation in the US Army during the Viet Nam war. He was a member of Clark Co. Post #90 of the American Legion and VFW Post #5975. Services in honor of his life will be 10:00 AM Monday at Pearce Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Marshall Cemetery with military graveside rites. Visitation will be 3-6 PM Sunday and prior services on Monday at the funeral home.
