M. Louise "Aunt Duck" Whitkanack Schlegel, 84, of Marshall, IL, formerly of clay City, IN passed away 10:15 AM Monday, May 21, 2012 in the Burnsides Community Care Center at Marshall. She was a retired registered nurse last working at Pfizer. She was born Feb. 16, 1928 at Paris, IL, the daughter of Claude Whitkanack and Stella Gabey Whitkanack. Her first husband, John Martin, preceded her in death on May 28, 1955 and her second husband, Lawrence "Fred" Schlegel preceded her in death on Sept. 10, 1993. Surviving are three children, Rita Kennedy of Washington, William Schlegel of North Carolina and Larry Schlegel of Indiana; a sister-in-law, Edith Whitkanack of Paris, IL; 3 grandchildren; several great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews and great great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Violet Truelove, Roeby Rector, John Whitkanack and Orval Whitkanack. She was a graduate of the former Paris Hospital School of Nursing and had taught in the rural Clark Co., IL school system. She was a member of the Eastern Star, a volunteer nurse for the American Red Cross and had been a hospice volunteer and volunteer at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and was a licensed pilot. Services in honor of her life will be 10:00 AM Saturday at Pearce Funeral Home in Marshall with Rev. Jim Blue officiating. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery at Clay City, IN. Visitation will be 4-8 PM Friday and 7:00 AM until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
